The SNL U.S. Bank Index increased by 2.2% during the third quarter of 2013 after increasing by 8.7% during the second quarter while posting a year-over-year gain of 28.1%. Smaller banks also posted gains during the second quarter, with the SNL U.S. Bank less than $500 million index increasing by 6.7% after increasing by 2.7% during the second quarter of 2013 with the index being up by about 29.5% for the year-over-year period. The SNL U.S. Bank $1 billion to $5 billion index posted an increase of 9.2% during the third quarter compared to the increase of 5.2% during the second quarter, while being up by 25.3% year-over-year. The S&P 500 was up by approximately 4.7% during the third quarter of 2013 after increasing by 2.4% during the second quarter of 2013 while being up by 16.7% year-over-year.
